Treatment of invasive Candida and invasive Aspergillus infections in adult haematological patients
نویسندگان
چکیده
An increasing incidence of invasive fungal infections is observed in most immunocompromised patients, and especially leukaemia patients. In order to decrease the mortality due to these infections, the clinicians need to optimise their treatment choices for the most common fungal infections observed in this population: invasive aspergillosis and candidiasis. These recommendations have been developed by an expert panel following an evidencebased search of the literature assessing the role of antifungal therapies in the treatment of patients with acute leukaemia or bone marrow transplantation and invasive candidiasis – including candidaemia – and aspergillosis. We present results from a questionnaire on the current practice among experts in Europe, show results of the literature search and provide the panel’s recommendations. 2007 Elsevier Ltd. A Review of Antifungals and their Mono- and Combination- therapy in the Treatment of Invasive Fungal Infections
Invasive fungal infections with high mortality rate are a growing health concern in hospitals and medical centers. The infection usually occurs in people with compromised immune systems. The purpose of this paper is a review of the most commonly prescribed antifungal drugs for invasive fungal diseases. Antifungals consist of the four main groups; polyenes, azoles, echinocandins and DNA an...

Nosocomial fungal infections are amongst the main causes of mortality in patients admitted to healthcare settings, especially in immunocompromised populations. The predominant pathogens include Candida spp., Aspergillus spp., Mucorales spp., and Fusarium spp. Nosocomial fungal infections are increasing due to the underlying factors in decades ahead. One of the predisposing factors i...
متن کاملCandida and invasive mould diseases in non-neutropenic critically ill patients and patients with haematological cancer.
Critically ill patients and patients with haematological cancer are HIV-negative populations at high risk of invasive fungal infections. In intensive-care units, candidaemia and intra-abdominal candidiasis predominate, but aspergillosis has emerged as a lethal, under-recognised cause of pneumonia. In patients with haematological malignancies or who have undergone stem-cell transplantations, pul...
متن کاملComparison of serum PCR assay and histopathology for the diagnosis of invasive aspergillosis and mucormycosis in immunocompromised patients with sinus involvement
Background and Purpose: Invasive fungal infections cause morbidity and mortality in patients with hematologic malignancies and immunosuppression. Although these infections are commonly caused by Candida and Aspergillus species, infections caused by Mucoralean fungi are also on a growing trend. The definitive diagnosis of mucormycosis includes visualization of non-septate hyphae on patholog...

Recently, despite the application of surgery and antifungal therapy, mortality rate of invasive fungal infections due to opportunistic fungi such as Candida and Aspergillus species has dramatically increased specially in immunocompromised host. The status of the immune system plays a key role in controlling the disease, yet antifungal therapy is of great benefit in saving involved patients. Tod...
